Chang Hee Lee-Nova Heater

At Design Interviews

Interview with Chang Hee Lee : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Chang Hee Lee : I was particularly inspired by the natural correspond between physical and non-physical the co-existence between purposes. .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Chang Hee Lee : I carried out a variety of experiments to find out the different expanding gradational effects between heat and various materials; I burnt several types of metal sheets, including bronze, titanium, aluminum, steel and copper and all in different thicknesses. During the cleaning process I lost some fingernails when I used hydrochloric acid. I might say that all the various experiments I did for creating Heating Nova show the alchemical aspects of my design processes. And… exploring the inter-relationship between the material and the heat was my main intention. The transformation of the object, which possesses a fascinating poetry aspects of the ordinary practice of heater. .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. Chang Hee Lee : I will mature this work and eventually will make into a real product. It will be good if I can get a real support from relevant companies. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Chang Hee Lee : 13 months .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Chang Hee Lee : The 'heat' simply attracted me in many ways. It does not only physically make space warm, but it further provides warm sincere space and emotion. The re-interpretation of everyday practices and senses led me to shape such a design scenario. .Frank Scott: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?. Chang Hee Lee : I would like to lease this design through a company. I am sure the design possesses many concepts in relation to marketing, inspiration, re-creation and more... It is a heating agency that can remarkably signify the heating unit. .Frank Scott: What made you design this particular type of work?. Chang Hee Lee : [Relevant to above answers] .Frank Scott: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?. Chang Hee Lee : No .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. Chang Hee Lee : I am looking for poetry. Everybody can appreciate this design. .Frank Scott: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?. Chang Hee Lee : It expresses the fundamental value and originality of the heat. .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. Chang Hee Lee : The name ‘Heating Nova’ expresses the expansion of the heat. The object shows well the growing mysterious energy from the bottom and that linked me with kinds of name. .Frank Scott: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?. Chang Hee Lee : Computer: Rhino, 3dMax, Photoshop, Vray and more.. Prototype: Titanium (Grade 6), Sandpapers, Hammer, hydrochloric acid, Laser cutter and more... .Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. Chang Hee Lee : Heating Nova is an exquisite product that can poetically express the principles of the heat emerging and growing into spaces, which also deliberately states the expanding emotional value of the warm heat. It possesses the symbolic property of the heat by using a rare thoughtful combination of the material and its function. It uniquely communicates with its own regular practice and will record itself with the growing heat and all these scenarios will ask users to broadly perceive and interpret the comprehensive meaning of the heat. It is a heating agency with a fundamental value of the heat created by unique juxtaposition. .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. Chang Hee Lee : I made it all myself from cutting to polishing surfaces. I had bought the materials from local titanium factory. .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. Chang Hee Lee : The design does not possess high technology or technological concept. It is all about re-interpretation of everyday practice. It is about re-creation of our everyday understanding. .Frank Scott: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?. Chang Hee Lee : I investigated diverse types of heater from central heating system type to ceramic, halogen, gas, electric and boiling type radiator. I further made lots of inspiring experiments with various materials. .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?. Chang Hee Lee : It was quite dangerous to handle all these heating processes during my experiment. During the cleaning process I lost some fingernails when I used hydrochloric acid. I might say that all the various experiments I did for creating Heating Nova show the alchemical aspects of my design processes. .Frank Scott: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?. Chang Hee Lee : I was looking for appropriate platform to reveal my design identity. A'award has a very good broad casting and pressing ability to worldwide and that fascinated me quite much. .Frank Scott: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?. Chang Hee Lee : [Relevant to above answers] .Frank Scott: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?. Chang Hee Lee : [Below is an part of introduction of my original description of this design essay] Nature constantly develops and never swiftly transforms. The gradually changing forms and the transiting mesh works between instances of the nature may deliberately show the properties of the phenomenological aspects of the space and practices. The blooming of a flower can be an appropriate metaphorical value of this progressive condition. It transforms and changes its condition while at the same time incorporating into its environmental surroundings and developing itself into a mature stage; expressing its condition by varying form: a beautiful term of Mother Nature Technology. .
